A Dietician's Perspective on Grass-Fed Beef v. Grain-Fed

A Dietician's Perspective on Grass-Fed Beef v. Grain-Fed

Is Grass-Fed Beef Really Better For You?

There is no denying that beef is a delicious, nutritious, and versatile food that is the shining star of some of our favorite dishes – from a juicy hamburger to a filet dinner. And while we know that beef is a nutrient-dense food that is loaded with vitamins and minerals like iron and zinc, you may be wondering if certain beef options are actually better for you than others. Specifically, you may want to know if grass-fed beef is indeed a healthier choice than other options.

Grass-Fed Beef Vs. Grain-Fed

All beef is created equal, right? The answer isn’t so simple. While all beef can provide high-quality protein, important nutrients, and an amazing taste, the nutritional quality may vary based on what the cow eats.

Cows in the US can be fed grains, grass, or a combination of the two. And while both will provide the cow with the nutrients it needs to grow, living off of these very different foods will supply the animal with certain nutritional differences.

Specifically, 100% grass-fed beef typically contains less fat than grain-fed beef, making 100% grass-fed meat a slightly leaner choice. Plus, the fat that is provided by the grass-fed beef consists of more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, with some cuts containing as much as four-times what is provided by grain-fed beef!

100% grass-fed beef can also contain more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) vs. grain-fed options. Some data suggest that CLA may help people lose weight and have a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although more data is needed to confirm this.

Some data also shows that 100% grass-fed beef contains vitamin K2, supporting bone health, vitamins A and E, and other antioxidants. And although taste is a subjective measurement, it has been said that grass-fed beef offers a more tender and appealing flavor than the grain-fed counterparts.

Grass-Fed Is A Healthy Beef Choice

All cuts of beef can play an important role in a healthy diet. From energy-supporting vitamin B12 to brain health-supporting choline, beef is jam-packed with essential. Nutrients that we can all benefit from.

But if you are trying to maximize your nutrient intake while enjoying one of your favorite foods, 100% grass-fed is the way to go. Whether you are enjoying a classic filet mignon, a hamburger, or a hearty beef stew, know that opting for grass-fed beef instead of grain-fed options may give you some extra nutritional benefits and a unique taste that grain-fed options can’t hold a candle to.
