The Faroe Islands are a small, remote island group located in the middle of the North Atlantic with a population of less than 50,000 people. The industry is committed to maintaining the highest levels of fish welfare and sustainability; this is clearly reflected in the high quality of Marine Raised Salmon from the Faroe Islands.

The Faroese people have lived off the ocean for centuries and have a deep respect for the ocean and the environment. The legislation ensures strict compliance with the highest level of fish welfare and environmental protection possible. This exclusive veterinary prevention program has been so effective that Marine Raised salmon from the Faroe Islands are completely free of antibiotics.

The Bakkafrost Salmon Farm

Bakkafrost's superior salmon is the result of their passion and dedication to quality and a testament to the excellent natural conditions for salmon in the Faroe Islands. Due to the company's complete vertical integration, they have full control over all aspects of their production, from fish meal and fish oil to the finished product.

Feed is one of the most important aspects when producing top quality salmon. Because of their vertical integration, Bakkafrost has full control of the content in their fish feed and they are able to keep a higher level of fish meal and fish oil in their fish feed than most other salmon producers. Their salmon keep a natural diet rich in sustainable marine resources supplied from their own fish feed facility. The result is a salmon with a better fat content rich in the healthy omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. This natural diet is evident in the great, fresh taste of their salmon.

All the fish which is used to produce Bakkafrost's fish meal and fish oil is sourced from approved sustainable fisheries. The result is a higher quality salmon produced sustainably with impressive food-in food-out results. In November 2014 Bakkafrost announced that all of it's salmon will be fed with feed produced from fish oil which is cleaned for environmental pollutants like PCBs and Dioxins.

PCBs and Dioxins can be detected in a lot of different foods. Limits for the content of these environmental pollutants are strictly regulated. Routine tests made by the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority show that the levels of these environmental pollutants in Faroe Islands salmon are far below all assigned limits. However, by cleaning the fish oil in the feed, Bakkafrost believes that it will differentiate it's salmon even more.

Bakkafrost salmon are raised in a very healthy environment and their practices ensure the welfare of the fish. Low stocking densities enable the salmon to grow naturally, producing a quality farmed salmon that is robust and healthy.


The Bakkafrost salmon farm in Gøtuvík is certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Counsel, making it the first salmon farm in the Faroe Islands to be ASC certified. The ASC standard was developed in cooperation with World Wildlife Fund and is seen as the most stringent in the aquaculture industry and outlines 8 main requirements with 422 individual points with stringent requirements regarding fish welfare, lice, smolt production, feed production and the environment. Bakkafrost´s Chain of Custody has also been ASC certified and the process of certifying more farms is underway

Bakkafrost is a proud member of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI). GSI is focused on the three pillars of sustainability: reducing environmental impact, increasing social contribution and maintaining economic growth. BRC, IFS, HACCP, FDA & other certifications are also in place.


All Bakkafrost employees are strongly encouraged to demonstrate a responsibility towards the environment and they are required to have the necessary knowledge of which environmental dangers go with the operation of the company as well as the necessary knowledge of how these dangers can be reduced. The company strives, to the greatest extent possible, to develop and apply environmental solutions.

The natural diet for wild salmon is of course rich in marine resources and by keeping their salmon's diet as natural as possible, Bakkafrost is able to show some of the industry's best Feed Conversion Ratios. Which is a key indicator of sustainability.

The salmon are farmed in a very healthy environment using best practices to ensure the welfare of the fish. Low stocking densities enable the salmon to grow naturally, producing a quality farmed salmon that is robust and healthy.

To maintain fish welfare and freshness, it is imperative that the transport time from on-growing site to brood stock station is as short as possible. Due to the small size of the Faroe Islands, these transport times are extremely short, guaranteeing optimal freshness and quality.
